Mariah (name)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Mariah is a female name of Middle Eastern ancestry. It is thought to be a variation of the name Maria, which is a Western World version of the ancient Hebrew name Miryam. This name may also be related to the Hebrew name Moriah. The name Mariah appeared as early as 1550 in Great Britain. It experienced a brief period of popularity in the United States throughout the 1800s and then faded from use and was virtually unheard of until the 1990's when the fad of naming babies after celebrities resulted in thousands of babies named after singer Mariah Carey.
