[edit] Overview

After a long period of studying at the Academy of Dramatic Arts, she made her breakthrough as an actress in Duccio Tessari's Una grande storia d'amore (1986), which was followed by roles in Daniele Luchetti's two projects Domani accadrà (1988) and La settimana della finge (1990). For the last one, she won the prize of best performance by an actress in a leading role at the San Sebastian International Film Festival.

After this success, she was the heroine in Sergio Rubini's La Stazione, an authentic Italian masterpiece for which she won her first David di Donatello Prize and the Silver Ribbon as best leading actress, in 1990. After La Stazione, she became a premier star featuring in Italian box office hits like Carlo Verdone's Maledetto il giorno che ti ho incontrato (1992), teaming up again with director with Daniele Luchetti for Arriva la bufera (1992), working for Mario Monicelli in Facciamo paradiso (1995) and Pozzessere (Testimone a rischio). In between, she was directed by her husband, Sergio Rubini, in the movie Prestazione straordinaria (1994) and began her association with Italian director Giuseppe Piccioni, who directed her in four films: the most important are Cuori al verde (1996) and especially Fuori dal mondo, which gave Margherita her second David di Donatello Award. Her marriage with Sergio Rubini's ended several years ago.

Now Margherita Buy is recognised as one of the most appreciated actresses of European cinema: Ferzan Ozpetek's His secret which she portrayed with absolute capableness a widow who discovered her husband's homosexuality (she won a Silver ribbon as best lead), Cristina Comencini 's Il più bel giorno della mia vita (Silver ribbon as best supporting actress), Paolo Virzi's Caterina in the Big City (for the one she won a David as best supporting of the year, the third, and the fourth Silver ribbon) and Giovanni Veronesi's manuale d'amore (a fourth David).

Her performance in I giorni dell'abbandono by Roberto Faenza, gave her the Golden Graal for best performance by an actress in a drama. Il caimano by Nanni Moretti, at the last Cannes film festival, gave her the Ciak d'oro 2006 as best lead actress.

In October 2006, she starred in the new release, La sconosciuta, by Academy Award winner Giuseppe Tornatore, and in December, Alessandro D'alatri's Commediasexy.

Later in 2006 she will shoot Falsa pista, the debut of Laura Morante as a director.
