Margaret is a female first name. The origin of the word "Margaret" is in Greek, from the word margaríta (μαργαρίτα), which means "pearl". An older root exists in the old-Indian word for pearl, mandjari.
Margaret has been an English name since the 11th Century, and remained popular throughout the Middle Ages. It became less popular between the 16th century and 18th Century, but became more common again after this period, becoming the second most popular name in the USA in 1903. Since this time, it has become slightly less common, but is still 130th in the USA.
It has a large number of diminutive forms in many different languages, including Maggie, Madge, Rita, Daisy, Greta and Peggy.

Drottning Margareta är den enda unionsmonark man i historieböckerna skrivit uppskattande om alltsedan 1800-talet och framåt. Hon beskrivs som kvinnlig men viljestark och med förmåga att hålla ihop ett splittrat Norden. Ända fram till idag har hon fått tjäna som symbol för den nordiska enhetstanken. Margareta såg som sin viktigaste uppgift att försöka bemöta det tyska hotet mot Norden. Litet förenklat kan vi med modernt språk säga att hon ville väcka en nordisk nationalism. Det är också Föreningen Norden som 1997 utgivit ett stort samlingsverk om Kalmarunionen och drottning Margareta.
