Mareeba Shire was originally known as the Sire of Woothakata, but was renamed to the Shire of Mareeba on December 20, 1947. It includes the old shires of Walsh, Barron and Chillagoe. From 1879 to 1919, the shire's offices were located at Thornborough on the Hodkinson goldfield.
