Marchioness of Pembroke

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The title of Marchioness of Pembroke was created by King Henry VIII for Anne Boleyn.

His great-uncle Jasper Tudor had been Earl of Pembroke. This was the year before Anne married Henry to become his second Queen Consort and it was an indication of his high regard for her. Save for William the Conqueror's niece, who was created Adelaide, 1st Countess of Albemarle in 1081, it was the first time a woman had been created a member of the English peerage in her own right, though others had inherited titles.
