Marcel Granet

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Marcel Granet (1884 - 1940) was a French sociologist, ethnologist and sinologist. As a follower of Emile Durkheim and Édouard Chavannes, Granet was one of the first to bring sociological methods to the study of China.

Granet entered the École Normale Supérieure in 1904, receiving his agrégation in history in 1907. Interested in feudalism and at the advice of Chavannes, he left for China for 2 years to study Chinese feudalism. Upon his return, he succeeded Chavannes as Director of Studies of Religions of the Extreme Orient at l’École Pratique des Hautes Études. He was also chair of Chinese civilization at the Sorbonne, professor at L'École des Langues Orientales, and co-founder and Governor of L’Institut des Hautes études Chinoises de Paris.

He began to become known in 1912 with his work Coutumes Matrimoniales de la Chine Antique. Besides numerous sociological essays on China, he published four books which have, since their appearance in the 20s and 30s, dominated all francophone Chinese studies: Fêtes et chansons anciennes de la Chine, Danses et légendes de la Chine ancienne, La civilisation chinoise, and La pensée chinoise.
