Marc Lescarbot

Marc Lescarbot (c.1570 – 1642) was a French author and lawyer. He was involved in Sieur de Monts' venture in Acadia and wrote Histoire de la Nouvelle-France (1609, followed by two other editions in 1612-1613 and 1617-18), which described French attempts at colonization in the Americas.
Lescarbot has also been described as the "father of Canadian theatre", with his "Theatre of Neptune in New France" being the first play written and performed in the so-called "New World". As the first piece of European literature and theatre, it has also been described as racist against First Nations Peoples, and as a "significant entry-point of Western cultural hegemony."
Plans are afoot to commemorate the play with a re-enactment on Nov. 14th, 2006, its 400th anniversary, prompting postcolonial theatre activists in Montreal to deconstruct and re-perform the piece as "Sinking Neptune."
