Mar Matte
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Mar Matte (Saint Matthew's Monastery), is located atop Mt. Maqloub in Northern Iraq. About 20 km from Mosul, Mar Matte was founded in 363 CE by a Christian called Matthew who was fleeing persecution from Diyarbakir, in what is today Turkey. A Kurd, Matthew joined a small Christian community already located atop Maqloub and under his leadership it became a true monastic community. It is today noted as one of the oldest Christian Monasteries in existence. It is further noted for a considerable collection of Syriac Christian manuscripts.
