Mapnik

Mapnik is an Open Source toolkit for developing mapping applications. Mapnik is written in C++ and there are Python bindings to facilitate fast-paced and agile development. Mapnik can comfortably be used for both desktop and web development.

[edit] Supported Platforms
As of 10/18/2006, only Linux is supported, but Windows support is being worked on. Alpha quality source, compilable for Win32, is available, but Win32 binaries are not distributed at this time.

Mapnik supports data access plugins, allowing users to expand its data format support.
As of 10/18/2006, Mapniks comes with support for:
- ESRI shape files
- PostGIS
- Web Map Service
- TIFF raster

In May of 2006, Mapnik's license changed from the GPL to LGPL.
