[edit] Introduction
Mapbender is an Open Source mapping software. The Mapbender OWS Client Suite is a framework for managing spatial data services. Mapbender is the software and portal site for geodata management of OGC OWS architectures. The software provides web technology for managing spatial data services implemented in PHP, JavaScript and XML. It provides a data model and interfaces for displaying, navigating and querying OGC compliant map services. The Mapbender framework furthermore provides authentication and authorization services, OWS proxy functionality, management interfaces for user, group and service administration in WebGIS projects.
[edit] Interactive Usage
The user can perform various interactive manipulations of the generated map, such as:
- zooming in, and out,
- panning,
- click and query,
- add new points, and annotations,
- turn layers on and off, and
- even adding more maps.
Please observe that this software only shows and manages maps. The maps themselves come from many different Map Services all over the world.
[edit] Examples
- An example of the software display is available at map application example.
- Examples of the generated maps can be found in the Mapbender Gallery.
[edit] Technical description
Mapbender provides interfaces for displaying, navigating and querying OGC OWS services (e.g. WMS, WFS, WFS-T, GML). The Mapbender framework additionally provides interfaces for user and group administration and management functionality for accessing maps rendered and data served by OGC Open Web Services. The Mapbender data base model has been designed to implement multi-client capabilities with respect to users, groups, interfaces and services. The following three basic components make up Mapbender.
- Users and Groups
- User Interfaces (graphic user interface)
- Map Services (OGC Open Web Services)
Currently Development focuses on WFS-T functionality, catalog and gazetteer services and orchestrating these in a spatial SOA.
[edit] Categorization
The Mapbender software covers the following topics:
- Web-GIS Client (OGC WMS, WFS, Catalog Service Client)

- Web-based Digitizing/Editing Functionality (OGC WSF-T Client)
- Service Meta Information Broker (ISO 19-hundred Series)
- Catalog System (ISO 19119 Service Meta Data)
- Security Management (Authentification, Authorization, SSO Secure Service)
- Accounting Management (Logging)
- Spatial Web Services Orchestrating
