The original image was Image:Map of China (physical) (small).png and was 280K, a nice map but too large to be on a high-traffic page like China.
This version is just as nice, IMHO, and is only 82K. Still big but better than before. -- Nate
I got down to the 60s by eliminating some colours (4000 -> 100): 82641 bytes -> 68246 bytes. Looks the same to me on my MultiSync monitor. Although the history isn't changed. Oh well, I gave up on image description page a while ago after Image:Smaller map of China.png --Menchi 20:37 3 Jul 2003 (UTC)

I humbly recommend a return to the png version, Image:Map of China (physical) (small).png, which I have shrunken to 48K using a simple palette reduction at the cost of a little discoloration. Derrick Coetzee 17:35, 25 Oct 2004 (UTC)
