Michael larkin, one of the Manchester Martyrs, was born in Lusmagh, near Birr. Lusmagh was then part of Co Galway( the only part of Co Galway east of the River Shannon) but became part of Co Offaly under the terms of the Local Government of Ireland Act 1998; hence the Manchester Martyrs memorial statue in Birr, Co Offaly.
