Manuel Vázquez Montalbán

Manuel Vázquez Montalbán (Barcelona, June 14, 1939 - Bangkok, October 18, 2003) was a Spanish journalist, poet and novelist, mainly known for his novels featuring Pepe Carvalho, a Barcelona private investigator of Galician origin. His novel Galíndez won him the Aristeion Prize in 1992.

He started out in 1967 as a poet, and his poetical work up to 1986 is published as Memoria y deseo (Memory and desire).

He was a Communist and member of the Unified Socialist Party of Catalonia. He was also well known gastronome, like his character Pepe Carvalho; in a few of his books, recipes appear.

For many years, he contributed columns and articles to the Madrid daily newspaper El País.

He died in Bangkok, Thailand, while returning to his home country from a speaking tour of Australia.
