Manuel Bartlett Díaz

Manuel Bartlett Díaz (Puebla de Zaragoza, Puebla, 1936-) was Secretary of Interior during the six years of Miguel de la Madrid, from December 1, 1982 to November 30, 1988. Probably it will be remembered by the famous "caída del sistema" in 1988 when, in his quality of Secretary of Interior, he presided over the Federal Electoral Commission. During the first years of the Carlos Salinas de Gortari government he was Secretary of Public Education, position he left after being nominated by the PRI as candidate to Governor of Puebla. His father, Manuel Bartlett Bautista was governor of Tabasco.

In 1999, he participated in the internal race of the PRI in search of the presidential candidadate. Its motto of campaign was Basta: Yo Manuel Bartlet no lo permitiré más. This position, nevertheless, was gained by Francisco Labastida Ochoa, who represented Institutional Revolutionary Party in the electoral race for July 2, 2000.

He was elected Senator in period of 2000 - 2006 and one of the most iron defenders of the state property on the power resources.

On May 27, 2006, Manuel Bartlett declared that in view of the low possibility of triumph of the PRI candidate to the Presidency, Roberto Madrazo Pintado, and he vote in favor of Andrés Manuel López Obrador to avoid the triumph of the right, the Madrazo candidate and the national leader of the PRI Mariano Palacios Alcocer has condemned those declarations and announced the possible expulsion of Bartlett from the party, before which he responded that in that case he will proceed against both leaders PRI members.
