Manny (Ice Age)

Manfred a.k.a. Manny or Manny the Mammoth is a fictional wooly mammoth that appears in Ice Age and its sequel, Ice Age: The Meltdown. He is voiced by Ray Romano.

At the start of Ice Age, Manny is portrayed as an antisocial inward-looking character who cares for no-one but himself. However, throughout the course of the movie we find out that he is a compassionate character who has just been through a lot of trauma and despair, and is in fact a very caring mammoth.
[edit] Ice Age 2 (The Meltdown)
Once more, Manny's character is developed throughout the film. At the start he is again portrayed as pessimistic and antisocial, although does have friends. By the end he has become much more light-hearted and fun, especially after meeting Ellie.

In Ice Age there is a flash back in which we see Manny's partner and child being killed by some humans out hunting. It is apparent that this is the reason he does not like socialising with any other animals - he is afraid that if he ever cared for someone again, there is the chance he will lose them. This has also lead to a dislike for creatures that kill for reasons other than food.
[edit] Attitude to Relationships
Manny has a firm belief that an animal should only have a relationship with one other animal for as long as they are alive together. "If you find a mate in life, you should be loyal." [1] Since his partner was killed (see above) it is likely that he believes he should never have another partner, i.e. stay loyal. However, whether he revises his beliefs or is just madly in love with Ellie, this idea is not retained in Ice Age 2.

At the very start of Ice Age, Manny becomes acquainted with Sid, the ground sloth, as a result of trying to help Sid take a human baby they found back to the baby's parents. Subsequently, he also becomes friends with Diego, the sabre-toothed tiger, who, pretends to help them take the baby back, although secretly wants to steal it for his own pack of sabertooth tigers as revenge against the humans..

In Ice Age 2, he met Ellie, the female wooly mammoth. Although he dislikes her at first, throughout the course of the movie, he develops feelings for her, and it is obvious by the end of the film that they are a couple. Manny also becomes friendly with Crash and Eddie, two obnoxious opossums.
