[edit] Plot

The film's opening had no connection with the rest of the story. Manmadhan(Silambarasan) poses as a mental patient who pours his woes of being dumped by his first love to a female doctor and ends up seducing her. He cries in her arms and then squeezes her hip. Then there is this dance sequence with the theme music. Right after that, the film moves to main female lead Mythili's(Jyothika) bedroom. Manmadhan attempts to rape her and apparently succeeds. And then Mythili wakes up...to realize it is all a dream. She had never seen Manmadhan and does not know him before the dream. But on the day itself, she spots his look-alike in the same lift as her, recognises him as the rapist from her dream and is scared to death. From then on, she runs away from him each time she bumps into him, much to his bafflement. He is an auditor who had just joined her music college. Soon, she quits the point of worrying and befriends the new student named Madhan Kumar(also played by Simbu). She gets a pregnancy scare, despite being a full-fledged virgin, when she vomits all of a sudden repeatedly. She reminisces the dream and rushes to the hospital for check-up. Her pregnancy report was flawed and she faints. Madhan Kumar comes to the rescue and solves the matter. It is then when she starts getting infatuated with him. He realises this and tries to avoid her by lying that he is married. His plan backfires and they soon become close friends. She falls really hard for him but realises he is hard to get. There was something mysterious about him she could simply not fathom or even ask. It is then that she glimpses him on a motorbike late on a saturday night with a sleeping female pillion rider. Naturally, she is heartbroken until she sees the photograph of his female rider in the News on TV the next day. She was missing since the last night she saw her with him! What completely shocked her is that the culprit is believed to be the same person who has abducted countless women who have never returned-the culprit had called the Inspector-in-charge of the kidnaps, Deva(Atul Kulkarni), and called himself 'Manmadhan' meaning 'casanova' in ordinary terms. In periodic intervals, episodes about Manmadhan's exploits with different women were shown: how he finds out about their unfaithfulness, seduces them and suffocates them before taking them to a secret underground location before electrifying them to ashes. 1 episode shows a long passionate French-kiss of seduction, not censored in the VCD(kissing is rare in Tamil movies). The ashes of each women was put in a bottle and labelled with her name on it. The secret location was never found. So the police never knew if the women were abducted and/or killed. After hearing what Mythili had witnessed, her friend urges her to make a police report about witnessing Manmadhan and the missing girl, and she does.

Over 500 policemen swarm the music college and arrest Madhan Kumar. In the interrogation room, he tells Inspector Deva of his past in a flashback. He had a younger twin Madhan Raj who was cheated by his girlfriend. He caught her making love to his pal and murders them both before returning to his older brother's place and relating the event to him. Then they have an argument and Madhan Raj escapes saying that he would assume the identity of 'Manmadhan' from then on and bring justice by murdering every girl he finds who cheats on her man. He vanishes after that without a clue. The police, after hearing his account, does all the necessary investigations on the existence of Madhan Raj. After having solid evidence that Madhan Raj had indeed existed and disappeared into oblivion, the police release Madhan Kumar after the court hearing. When he is free, Mythili falls into his arms and begs for his forgiveness before revealing her true feelings to him. He rejects her on the spot, not citing proper reason. She implores to him to reciprocate, confessing that she first saw him in her dream where he raped her.

She says, "In my dream, i gave you my viginity. In real life, when I found out you are a good guy, I gave you my heart. Now if you tell me you won't be there for me, I will give you my life!". He scolds her for her foolish statement. Finally she gives up, sensing his stubbornness. Before she leaves, she tells him that she is confident that he will return her feelings one day.

As he watches her leave with tears in his eyes, he narrates to her in his mind that he too loves her but could not reveal it. The reason behind it comes as the final plot twist. He is "Manmadhan"! He was the serial-killer who lured unfaithful women to his underground location and burned them. The true flashback comes as he narrates that Madhan Raj, his younger twin, only killed the girl he loved and the man she was making love to. After he came to his older brother's apartment, he narrated his murders and once Madhan Kumar was out of sight, he locked the front door from the inside and hanged himself, despite his brother's continuous pleas from the window. After he dies, Madhan Kumar breaks open the front door, astonished that he was not able to break it open earlier. He tells Raj's corpse, "1 girl cheated you, you killed her. Many girls cheat men all over the world. I will kill them, in your place. I will conceal your death". He carries his corpse to THE underground location and burns the corpse. That became the place where he burns the other cheating women he catches in the future. To save the world from cheated and hurt men like his brother, he decided to go on a revenge killing spree.

When we are returned to the present, he continued narrating to Mythili(even when she was long gone), "If my brother found a good girl like you, he would have lived. And we would have been happy together. But everything happens as per fate. I will continue this secret life of mine(so i can't love you because I don't want to be unfaithful to you). Only this is important to me. I don't whether I'm right or wrong. Only God knows. The Lord is with me" and he looks upward to Heaven. The credits then start rolling.

[edit] Trivia

  • This film sparked vicious gossips in tabloids that its plot was based on a real-life past incident of Silambarasan. Apparently, he had been cheated by Aishwarya, daughter of Superstar Rajnikanth, who dumped him for his box-office rival Dhanush. His ordeal of their break-up inspired him to make Manmadhan. Silambarasan did not deny these rumours.
  • 'Manmadhan' is actually another name for Kama, the Indian God of Love.
  • At the end of the film, a 'to be continued' sign flashes, hinting a sequel.
  • The sequel is believed to be Vallavan directed by Silambarasan himself and slated for a mid-2006 release but this is not true as Vallavan has a completely different story and that to ends as the same as Manmadhan
