From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Manhattan State Hospital on Ward's Island in New York City was opened in 1899 when The New York State Department of Mental Hygiene took over the immigration and asylum buildings after the opening of Ellis Island. At the time, it was the largest psychiatric hospital in the world. It later became the Manhattan Psychiatric Center.
It is known as the hospital where ragtime composer Scott Joplin was hospitalized in 1916 for schizophrenia aggravated by syphilis. Wilhelm Steinitz, the first undisputed world chess champion, was hospitalized and died there in 1900.
The site is a part of Ward's Island Park and is administered by the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation.
