Mandopop

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mandopop (or mandapop) is a colloquial abbreviation for "Mandarin pop music". The term refers to C-pop in which the lyrics are in Mandarin Chinese. Sometimes, the same song is produced in both Cantonese (Cantopop) and Mandarin versions.

For a long time Taiwan was the centre of mandopop, with artists from other countries with large Chinese communities like Singapore and Malaysia also contributing artists who became popular with the large Taiwanese record labels such as Rock Records.

Mandopop titles are available to overseas Chinese communities such as San Francisco Bay Area, Greater Los Angeles/Orange County, New York City Metropolitan Areas in the United States, and Vancouver, BC and Toronto Metropolitan Areas in Canada. Recently, a wider selection of music has been made available in the Greater San Diego and Greater Seattle Areas than before, courtesy of the Tawa Ranch 99 Supermarket Plazas that have been developed there. Other potential Metropolitan Areas that may have a market for such pop music are southwest Houston/Sugar Land and Richardson (near Dallas), in Texas as there are Asian plazas and supermarkets that have been developed there.

During the last few years the pop market on the Chinese mainland has opened up and there has been an explosion of new mandopop artists from Mainland China.

[edit] Musical Styles

Modern Mandopop covers many musical styles, including rhythm and blues, ballads, Hip hop, and rock.

Recent years also saw the rise of bubblegum pop boybands and girlbands in the Chinese scene, with commercially successful acts such as S.H.E. Pop musician, Jay Chou, was also widely credited for leading to the popularity of rhythm and blues and rap music in the Chinese scene.
