Manchester Universities Guild of Change Ringers
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Manchester Universities Guild of Change Ringers, formerly the Manchester University Guild of Change Ringers, is a society of bell ringers consisting of present and former students and staff of the universities in Manchester and Salford in the north west of England. The members are popularly known as Mugs.
The guild was formed in 1948 in the University of Manchester. After acquiring many associate members from UMIST, the University of Salford, Manchester Metropolitan University (formerly Manchester Polytechnic), and other colleges in Manchester, it ceased to qualify for membership of, and sponsorship from, the Union of the university in the 1980s. Consequently the name changed to reflect the wider membership.
