Manchester Mayfield Station

Manchester Mayfield was the name of a former main railway station in Manchester, England. The station first opened to passengers in 1911.
It was located adjacent to Manchester London Road station (renamed Manchester Piccadilly in 1960) in Manchester City Centre, UK. It was constructed as an overspill station for London Road because at that stage London Road was not big enough to cope with the huge volume of passengers.
As the traffic decreased it became surplus to requirements was closed on 23rd August 1960. It gradually rotted away but was given a temporary respite a decade later when it was converted into a parcel depot which began operation on the 6th of July 1970.
The parcel depot was eventually closed in the 1980's and left the building idle ever since.

Despite an extension and major renovation of Piccadilly Station it is again running out of capacity so there has recently been a proposal to re-open Mayfield. It will either be a terminus, as it was in a previous life, or lines will be extended through the station to join up with the existing line on to Manchester Oxford Road.
[edit] Use in television productions
Since its closure Manchester Mayfield has on occassion been used for television productions. Most notably it was used as a backdrop for a drug traffickers den in the Granada production of Prime Suspect 5 starring Helen Mirren, and "Sheffield railway station" in The Last Train.
