Malvern East is a suburb of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. It is in the Local Government Area of the City of Stonnington. Its postcode is 3145.

Malvern East is bounded to the north by Wattletree Road and Gardiners Creek, to the east by Warrigal Road, to the south by the Princes Highway (Dandenong Road) and to the west by Tooronga Road.

The suburb is also home to the Chadstone Shopping Centre, one of Australia's largest shopping centres.

Once a relatively small suburb based on its easterly proximity to Malvern, the expansion and redefintion of East Malvern was driven in the 1990s by resident groups eager to rename their address to something more upwardly mobile than Chadstone. A willing Stonnington (then Malvern) council saw the opportunity for increased rate revenue as house prices went up and the suburb today covers an area over twice as large as its previous version. Of course, the expansion of Malvern East is a kind of running joke in Melbourne, and its cache as 'a part' of Malvern is now lost - the two suburbs are nothing like each other.

[edit] Transport

Malvern East is serviced by Darling, East Malvern and Holmesglen railway stations, all on the Glen Waverley line; Caulfield and Malvern railway stations on the Frankston Line, Cranbourne Line and Pakenham Line ; the numbers 3 and 5 tram routes; and the numbers 612, 623, 624, and 627 bus routes.
