[edit] History

When in the 11th century the county Strijen had to be divided, Malle was subdivided in an eastern and western part. The Eastern part - Oostmalle - bccame part of the "heerlijkheid" of Breda, and the western part stayed together with the village Zoersel under authority of the Dukes of Brabant. In 1794, Westmalle and Zoersel became separate municipalities. Westmalle was up to and including 1976 an independent municipality. On 1 January 1977 Westmalle merged with Oostmalle in a new municipality. Initially it was called Westmalle, but in 1979, the name was changed to Malle.

[edit] Tourism

The important curiosities of Malle are the Renesse castle, the castle of Baron Van der Straten-Wailliet, the castle of Blommerschot, the Maria-cave at the Herentalsebaan, the Saint Laurentius church, Saint Paulus church and the Saint Martinus church. The most important lokal festivity is the so-called "Salphenkermis" in the hamlet Salphen.
