Mall at Rockingham Park
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Mall at Rockingham Park is located in Salem, New Hampshire, adjacent to the Rockingham Park race track. Named for Salem's location in Rockingham County, New Hampshire, and more specifically, the mall's location next to the race track, The Mall at Rockingham Park is the state's third shopping mall, with 140 stores. Anchors include a 168,000 square foot (which added 30,000 square feet in 1998) Macy's, J.C. Penney, and Sears. In 2006, the mall's original Macy's store was closed and Macy's then moved into the location formerly occupied by Filene's. The 159,000 square foot Macy's was originally Jordan Marsh, that opened in Spring 1994.
Like the Pheasant Lane Mall in Nashua, it is located close to the Massachusetts border in order to attract residents of that state. New Hampshire has no sales tax on most goods. The success of the Mall at Rockingham Park, which opened in August 1991, caused the Methuen Mall across the line in Methuen, Massachusetts, to close in 1997, and be replaced with a "big box" center. It also caused the adjacent (and older) Rockingham Mall to convert into a "big box" center as well, as Salem could no longer support two shopping malls.
The mall is owned by Melvin Simon and Associates.
