Malik Rose is a National Basketball Association player with the New York Knicks.
Rose was born November 23, 1974 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) and graduated from Overbrook High School in Philadelphia, the same high school as Wilt Chamberlain. At Drexel, Malik averaged over 16 points and 12 rebounds per game throughout his four year college career.
Rose was originally drafted in 1996 in the 2nd round out of Drexel University by the Charlotte Hornets. He graduated from Drexel with All-American honors after leading their Dragons to their lone NCAA Tournament victory. Rose is the second Drexel basketball player to participate at the professional level, following Michael Anderson. He was traded to the San Antonio Spurs in 1997, and was on the Spurs' NBA championship teams in 1999 and 2003. On February 24, 2005, Rose was traded along with a pair of first round draft picks to the New York Knicks for Nazr Mohammed and Jamison Brewer.
Malik was the first player of an opposing team of the Boston Celtics to win the Tommy Award, which is given by Celtics broadcaster and former great Tommy Heinsohn to the player who displayed the most hustle and enthusiasm during the game.
Rose was the owner of the now closed Malik's Philly's Phamous, a restaurant in San Antonio's Quarry Market. The menu, with items named after fellow Spurs players, featured an array of original style Philly Cheesesteaks, including a vegetarian offering named for former Spur Sean Elliott, as well as a variety of other foods, such as pizza, sandwiches, salads and burgers. For dessert, the restaurant offered the "Iceman's" Italian Ice, a unique icy treat available in 14 different flavors, and authentic bakery-fresh Tastykake pastries.
