Malignus Youth
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Malignus Youth were a hardcore punk band from Sierra Vista, Arizona that was active from 1987-1994 and again from 1999-2001. They released one album, two eps, a compilation of vinyl tracks, and a retrospective compilation of unreleased tracks. The songs were written by James Martin, who has been covered by such publications as maximumrocknroll [1] and Tucson Weekly [2][3]. They are known for their exceptional complexity in both musical arrangements and vocal harmonies as well as their breakneck speed. Some described the group as "barbershop quartet meets warp speed punk." Band members included:
- James Martin (guitars/vocals)
- Octavio Olaje (vocals)
- Tom Shelden (bass/vocals)
- Mike Armenta (drums/vocals)

[edit] History
Malignus Youth played with many (now) world-famous punk bands. One of their earliest shows of this sort was a show in 1989 with Bad Religion, Cosmic Jackhammer, and f.u.c.t. In June of 1992, Malignus Youth opened a show in Phoenix for ALL (band). This resulted in an offer from Stephan Egerton and Bill Stevenson to record their next album for SST Records (this arrangement was never completed). Malignus Youth completed one national tour in 1992 in addition to many local tours of Arizona. Their national tour included playing with such acts as Green Day at 924 Gilman Street, The Mighty Mighty Bosstones in Salt Lake City, and The Offspring in Colorado, and witchypoo in Olympia, WA, as well as playing at the famous Taco Land venue in San Antonio, TX. After releasing their full length record and completing another tour in 1994, the band informally disbanded. In 1998, the whole of Malignus Youth's recorded output was re-released on two CDs. In 1999, the band re-formed, playing a series of reunion with both national punk acts such as Dirty Rotten Imbeciles, Fear, The Misfits, and Citizen Fish as well as friends from the old Cochise County scene such as American Deathtrip and Headspace.
In 2001, in the 25th Anniversary of Punk Rock issue of Spin Magazine's website supplement, Jim Adkins of Jimmy Eat World was asked his opinion on the best punk albums of all time. He responded "Malignus Youth, More To It. Yup. That's pretty much the best."
