Maldon has grown dramatically in size in the past few years, and despite its small size holds a large catchment area for many neighbouring villages. The town has a large leisure centure and bowling alley, along with two large supermarkets: Tesco and Morrisons (formerly Safeway).

Maldon hosts a famous Mud Race on the banks of the River Blackwater, every Boxing Day, and despite health and safety fears in recent years, the event is still going strong.
