Malcolm Betruger

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dr. Malcolm Betruger (very similar to the German word 'Betrüger' meaning 'deceiver') is a fictional character in the video games Doom 3 and Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil (expansion pack) by id Software, voiced by Philip L. Clarke. He is the main antagonist in both Doom 3 and Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil. In Doom 3, Dr. Betruger is the head scientist of the Union Aerospace Corporation on Mars, while in Resurrection of Evil, he is part of a flying dragon-like demon named the Maledict. He is an elderly, completely bald, overworking doctor, whose right eye is grayed over with blindness.

In Doom 3, Betruger, crazed by his teleportation visits to Hell, deliberately sabotages the UAC's main teleporter and gateway to Hell, removing safety constraints and allowing an invasion by demonic forces. Seemingly in return for his services (in a Faust-esque agreement), he is awarded great supernatural power, including a degree of omnipresence and the ability to command armies of demons. Following the disaster on Mars, he plans to lure the Marines of the Earth Fleet to Mars and use their spacecraft to send his demons to Earth. By doing so, he may conquer and rule the planet. However, he is foiled in his attempts by the player's character. In the game's closing cinematic he appears to be eaten by the Maledict demon in Hell - however, it is revealed in Resurrection of Evil that he has in fact become the monster, his head extending on a stalk from within its mouth. In this new form, he plots another demonic invasion of Mars. He is finally killed at the conclusion of Resurrection of Evil, reduced to nothing but a skull.
