Malchus

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In the New Testament of the Bible, Malchus was the name of a servant of the high priest who helped try to arrest Jesus. Peter, one of the disciples, was armed.

Then Simon Peter having a sword drew it, and smote the high priest's servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant's name was Malchus. Then said Jesus unto Peter, Put up thy sword into the scabbard: the cup which my Father hath given me, shall I not drink it? — (John 18:10-11, KJV)

Jesus heals Malchus's ear (his last recorded miracle) and is led off to eventually be crucified. The story illustrates non-violence and surrender to God's will.

The story is related in all four gospels, but Malchus is mentioned by name only in John.
