Malayali Brahmins

Malayali Brahmins are Brahmins whose mother-tongue is the Malayalam language. Nearly all of them hail from the south Indian state of Kerala, which was created in 1956 to unite areas having a Malayalam-speaking majority. Malayali brahmins are broadly classified into two:

  • Namboothiri Brahmins - The upper class of Malayali brahmins, who performs priestly activities.
  • Pushpaka Brahmins (Ambalavasis) - The lower class of Malayali brahmins who performs Kazhakam (temple related activities)
