Malawi Railways was the government organisation that ran railways in Malawi until privatisation, when Rail Development Corporation won the right to operate these trains.

In July 2006, the Republic of China (Taiwan) sent 4 diesel electric locomotives (R20 series: R56, R57, R58 and R59) to Malawi Railways.
