Makai Tensho
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Makai Tensho (魔界転生 Makai Tenshō?) is a novel by Futaro Yamada. It is a tale of historical fiction in which Amakusa Shirō Tokisada resurrects other dead historical figures to overthrow the Shogunate. Yagyū Jūbei Mitsuyoshi rises to fight Amakusa and his warriors of the dead. The roster of the dead often varies depending on which depiction, but usually contains Miyamoto Musashi, Yagyu Munenori and Hōzōin Inshun.
This story has been adapted into a live-action picture three times; first in 1981 by Kinji Fukasaku, who later went on to direct the cult hit, Battle Royale. The story of Makai Tenshō was also turned into a manga by mangaka Shōko Toba as Makai Tenshō: Yume no Ato (Resurrection from Hell: Sign of Dreams). This was then adapted into two anime OVAs (although originally planned for four) as Makai Tenshō Jigoku-hen, later released in the U.S. under the name Ninja Resurrection.
