Major General Jonathon Riley

Jonathon Riley is a Major General in the Royal Welch Fusiliers. He joined the Army in 1973 and was awarded a medal for bravery in 1996. He has served six tours in Northern Ireland, five in the Balkans, in addition to service in Central America and Sierra Leone, and has been commanding troops in Iraq since 2004. Major General Riley, who turned 50 on January 16th 2005, was brought up in Yorkshire, and educated at St Mary's School in Beverley, and Kingston School, before gaining a degree in geography from the University College of London and a Masters in history at Leeds University. He is the author of a number of books on military history and is the fiance of BBC Wales news presenter Sara Edwards.
