While it is indeed found that Bartlett's stomach contained a fatal quantity of chloroform (although had not caused any damage to his throat or windpipe), Adelaide Bartlett was acquitted possibly because the prosecution were unable to explain the cause of death or how she could have committed the crime.

Body discovered six months later in Yateley, Hampshire. The investigation gained national media coverage and was the largest investigation undertaken by Surrey police. No formal charges of murder have ever been bought to trial.
