Majesty demos

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Majesty Demos were the first recorded attempts of the now famous progressive metal band Dream Theater, under their original name "Majesty". The original 1986 tape contained six tracks which were recorded on Mike Portnoy's analog 4-track recorder and another 4-track recorder obtained from friends at Berklee. Only 1,000 copies were pressed on cassette tape and distributed to fans and rock and metal magazines. One particular copy was hand delivered from Portnoy to Jim Matheos of Fates Warning. The tape was soon spread around the progressive metal scene.

The line-up for the Demos is almost the same as that which would ascend to fame with Images and Words: Kevin Moore, John Myung, John Petrucci and Portnoy. The difference is the addition of Chris Collins, a vocalist who was introduced to the band after a friend heard a demo of him singing a note-for-note version of Queensrÿche's "Queen of the Ryche".

The album is a bass-heavy and ambitious work that clearly show the band's talent, especially at their young age. Signs of Rush influence and other progressive metal and rock themes are present including complex time signatures and lengthy compositions.

The original six tracks as well as several other songs, including covers of Rush and Talas songs, are available on the band's YtseJam Records label.
