I moved the above draft here, because this is the working area.
I've analyzed the draft, and the difficult part about this design is that the color formatting for the features appears to be within the template content itself. Well, since the template content comes from 5 other departments, to get this version to work it would be necessary to deal with all five departments and have them reformat the content from their end. --Go for it!

[edit] Making an alternative page your main page
After someone requested it on Talk:Main Page alternative (Classic 2006) and I couldn't find a solution here I came up with a little bit of JavaScript to always redirect you to an alternate Main Page when you go to Main Page. It's at User:Ian Moody/custommainpage.js and probably isn't the best way to do it, but if anyone would find this usful or knows how to improve it feel free. Obviously you will have to replace the url with the one for your preferred version. — Ian Moody (talk) 21:14, 22 March 2006 (UTC)

It's nice to see that the page/department taking on a life of its own. I was pleasantly surprised to see that others have added MP versions to it, and innovative ones at that. --Go for it! 21:07, 5 April 2006 (UTC)
