—nameCarl N. DennisEuropean Air Tragedy. A midair colision of two C119 Flying Boxcars which carried 66 servicemen to their deaths near Stutgard, Germany occurred on August 11th, 1955. The tragedy, which took the lives of 10 airmen and 56 soldiers of the 7th Army's 499th Engineer Bn, was Europe's worst post WWII air disaster. It occurred during air transport exercises from Echterdingen airfield. One plane carried five Air Force men and 42 soldiers, and the second carried five airmen and 14 soldiers. The accident occurred at 4,000 feet, 15 minutes after takeoff when one of nine C119's developed engine trouble. Veering into the path of the second plane, it crashed followed by the second plane. The planes fell into Germany's famed Black Forest a mile and a half apart and burned upon impact. There were no survivors. In January, 1956 a chappel bell and a silver plaque bearing the names of the 56 members of the 499th Engr. Bn (C), was hung in the soldiers base Phillips Barracks chappel in Karlsruhe, Germany.
