[edit] Notable Residents
Mahtomedi is home to the lead singer of band Motion City Soundtrack, Justin Pierre
George Smith coached the Mahtomedi Zephyrs from 1951 - 1993 and during his tenure he solidified himself as one of the greatest football coaches in Minnesota State High School League history. Not only did he pile up over 226 victories, but he also led several undefeated teams and led one squad that shut out every opponent on their schedule.
Known for his great halftime pep talks and tough conditioning drills, rumor has it that George once stabbed a pencil through the palm of his hand during a halftime talk and didn't even flinch.
Mahtomedi's now historic football program plays at George Smith Field, named in honor of the great coach, and is now the home of the 2005 State Champions. The Zephyrs were led by two All-Star players Harrison Andrews at Wide Receiver and Thomas Sellwood at Free Safety. Andrews ended the season with 40 catches for 800 yards with a 20 yard average (Number 1 in the State) and Thomas Sellwood ended the season with 60 tackles, 4 Interceptions, and 3 Fumble recoveries one in which he took "to the house" to win the state quarter-final game against Lakeville South. Andrews was also a standout in the post-season with a touchdown in each of the state games including a game-winning touchdown in the state semi-finals. Andrews and Sellwood were the pride of the Zephyrs and will live in the hearts of Zephyr fans forever. In other words...they are perfect, some would call them prodegies. They will be attending university of Indiana to take over the football program next season...
Also led by Harrison Andrews, the Zephyr Varsity Boys Basketball team defeated the Varsity Girls hockey team in a game of ice hockey. Andrews led the boys with 5 goals and the game-winner in double over-time...Andrews, Sellwood, and Sean Barrett look to defend their title at the District Center in a 3 on 3 tournament against Kaitlyn Henry, Minnesota Gopher recruit Laura May, and long-time zephyr Amanda Holker. Good Luck Boys!! Go Get em!!
