Mahmoud Abdel-Malik is an influential and progressive Egyptian lecturer in Arabic Language studies at the American University in Cairo (AUC). He was born in Helwan, Cairo, the son of local school teacher. After studying at Cairo University during the Nasser-period educational reforms, Abdel-Malik graduated with a doctorate in Arabic Language and began lecturing at his alma mater.
In 1996, Abdel-Malik transferred to the AUC, where he headed a new directive teaching Arabic to foreign students visiting Cairo for their study-year abroad. Since then, he has promoted an initiative teaching Arabic in a one-year intensive course, designed to replace the slower and less-effective traditional foreign university structure, popular in the USA and UK.
