Mahaweli Ganga
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Mahaweli Ganga is the longest river in Sri Lanka. It is nearly 300 km long. Its drainage basin is the largest in Sri Lanka, and covers almost one-fifth of the total area of the island. The river reaches the sea at Trincomalee in the north east of Sri Lanka. It continues as a major submarine canyon, making Trincomalee one of the finest deep sea harbours in the world.[1] The river is heavily dammed in order to produce hydroelectricity and water for irrigation. This has brought almost 1,000 kmĀ² of land under irrigation.[2] Mahaweli Ganga is a Sinhalese name that means "great sandy river."[3]
