Mahatma Gandhi Road, Bangalore
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The M. G. Road in Bangalore is one of the busiest roads in the city, and is lined on one side with upscale stores and restaurants. Branching off M.G. Road is Brigade Road, and perpendicular to Brigade Road is Church Street - together, these three roads combine to form a major shopping district, consisting of several malls, movie theaters, eateries and designer boutiques. This is the place most frequented by foreigners and hosts both modern and buildings of the past. MG Road was called "South Parade" in British times and renamed post Independence. Many Indian cities (ie. Delhi, Mumbai)have an "MG" road, and in general there is no linkage between these various roads (except that in many cases, these happen to be the busiest part of the city) In many respects, MG Road Area represents the city centre; this is though changing with the rapid growth of the city and its outskirts. MG Road runs from Trinity Circle at one end to Anil Kumble Circle at the other; and has an eclectic mix of hotels (Taj Residency, Park, Oberoi), swanky office buildings (ING, various other banks) and old world shops (crockery, book shop, sweets, movie theatres) dating several decades. Brigade Road runs roughly perpendicular to MG Road and is full of pubs / cafes / show rooms. Church Street is more of the same. The whole area is more than just a shopping / eating belt. MG Road is where Bangalore-ites go and hang around when they have nothing else to do. This may yet change with some international malls opening in Bangalore in other locations in 2004/2005 (Forum).
