Magoun Square
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Magoun Square is a neighborhood of Somerville, Massachusetts located at the intersection of two major streets, Broadway and Medford Street, with the smaller Dexter Street. It is close to Tufts University in neighboring Medford, Massachusetts. It is a mixed-use urban area. Medford Street crosses into Medford just north of this intersection and becomes Main Street.
Magoun Square continues to experience a local business renaissance in 2005 after a large drugstore moved into the heart of the square in early 2004. The Magoun Square Neighborhood Association coordinated by Joe Lynch is intimately involved in this ongoing revival/renewal.
Magoun Square was named after Thatcher Magoun, a Medford icon who led its shipbuilding industry in the mid-1800s1.

The neighborhood immediately to the west of the commercial district is one of the sites listed for a proposed station stop on the new mass transit, light rail Green Line extension. The expected completion date is 2013.
As gentrification continues throughout the City, Magoun Square's proximity to the Green Line extension is attracting developers. In 2004, a five acre former industrial parcel was acquired by a Boston developer. The developer proposes to build 200 market rate condominums. Permitting, community and government hearings will continue throughout the Fall of 2006 and Winter of 2007.
