Magnius is one of the Five Desian Grand Cardinals and ruler of the Palmacosta Human Ranch. He is well-known for his brute force and an overuse of the word "vermin". He's the weakest of the Five Grand Cardinals.

[edit] History

The Desians of the Palmacosta Human Ranch are first encountered when attempting to bully a the owners of a shop, Cacao and her daughter Chocolat, into giving them discounts on goods. Chocolat refuses and humiliates the Desians. The half-elven troops, unable to kill Chocolat then and there (they would exceed their Death Quota for the year), are forced to return to their master, Magnius. The owner of the shop, Cacao, is also the daughter of Marble, the old woman who Genis befriended at the Iselia Human Ranch. Lloyd was forced to kill Marble after she was transformed into a monster, but Cacao and Chocolat are unaware of this.

Lloyd and his friends meet with Magnius himself when he arrives to oversee the execution of Cacao (on the grounds that she refused to sell the Desians supplies). Magnius gloats about how he will become the leader of the Grand Cardinals once he gets Lloyd's special Exsphere. He orders one of his men to attack the party using the Fireball spell. Genis intercepts and blocks the magic attack. Angered by this humiliation, Magnius gives the order to hang Cacao. Colette uses one of her charkhams to cut the ropes, and Cacao lands safely on the ground. Magnius and his men are temporarily distracted by this, and Kratos takes the opportunity to attack Magnius. Wounded, Magnius retreats, leaving some of his Desians to take care of Lloyd's group. The party promptly defeats them.

Magnius then makes arrangements with Palmacosta's Governor-General, Dorr, to kidnap Chocolat and lure the Chosen's party into a trap. While the citizens of Palmacosta look up to their leader, Dorr is secretly working for Magnius. The Grand Cardinal put a demon seed in Dorr's wife, Clara, turning her into a monster. Magnius then tricked Dorr into thinking that, if the Governor-General gave him enough Gald (currency), he would remove the demon seed. Of course, there is no way to remove a demon seed once it has sprouted, but Magnius is effectively able to control his only real threat, Palmacosta.

The party is warned of this, but they regardless go to rescue Chocolat from Magnius. On the way, they discover other trapped prisoners, who they release. The party eventually finds Chocolat on one of the highest levels of the Ranch. They then proceed to search for the control room, where Magnius is likely to be. When they get there, they indeed find the Grand Cardinal, who has caught the prisoners that the party released in a trap.

The gloating Magnius reveals to Chocolat that Marble, her grandmother, was killed by Lloyd. Grief-striken, Chocolat refuses to accept any help from the people who murdered her grandmother, and the Desians once more capture her. Magnius takes this time to order his Desian troops to attack the party, who hold them off. An angered and humiliated Magniuis challenges the party himself, and the battle finally begins.

The party is victorious over the Grand Cardinal, who is in disbelief that he lost. Kratos explains that Colette is the true Chosen One, and that Cruxis itself has recognized her. Magnius collapses, saying that he was deceived, and Raine proceeds to release the trapped captives before starting the self destruct sequence.

Left alone in the control room, a dying Magnius attempts to warn Forcystus about the lies they have been told, but Rodyle, another Grand Cardinal, cuts him off. He thanks Magnius for being so easily manipulated. Magnius dies.

Magnius is a rather unpleasant bully. He is the least-knowledgable of all the Desian Grand Cardinals. However, he is a loyal servant to Yggdrasill and will fight for the rights of half-elves. His reliance on his brute force instead of his brain proves to be his undoing.

[edit] Boss Battle

Magnius's style of fighting is true to his personality: he will constantly try to beat the enemy down with physical force. He is supported by two Desian troops; a Bowman and a Whip Master. Magnius carries a huge ax-like weapon in one hand and an equally large hooked shield in the other. His magical techniques draw power from the Fire element.

Attacks:

  • Fire Ball - Magnius throws three fireballs at his target.
  • Eruption- Magnius summons a volcanic eruption underneath his target, hitting three times.
  • Flame Lance - Magnius launches a giant flaming lance that skewers his target, then proceeds to hit a second time with an explosion.
  • Beast - Magnius swipes at his target, unleashing a beastly head of energy that blows his target away.
  • Hell Hound - Magnius catches and holds his target with his shield, then blows the target away with a small explosion.
  • Hell Axe - Magnius hits his target to the ground with his axe, even if the target is defending.
