Magdalena Oldendorff

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Magdalena Oldendorff is a German owned, Liberian registered, vessel which has been chartered to supply several Antarctic research stations. In June 2002 the Magdalena Oldendorff was frozen in. The Argentinian ice-breaker Almirante Irizar rendered assistance, to the crew, and was able to airlift some of the more crucial supplies. But the Magdalena Oldendorff had to be left to overwinter, while locked in the ice. During the Antarctic summer (December to March) the ice concentration became more favourable for the ship and she departed from her safe position in Muskegbukta heading for Cape Town beginning of December 2002. All 17 crew members, including one medical doctor of the ARA Almirante Irizar, arrived safe and sound back in Cape Town ten days later.
