Madras School of Social Work

'Madras School of Social Work', established in 1952, is located in Chennai, South India, and is affiliated to the University of Madras. The School offers various under-graduate and graduate courses in social sciences.

The Madras School of Social Work was founded by Mary Clubwala Jadhav, under the auspices of Madras State Branch of the Indian Conference of Social Work (renamed the Indian Council of Social Welfare) and the Guild of Service (Central). The College is run under the aegis of the Society for Social Education and Research.

The Madras School of Social Work is a member of the Association of Schools of Social Work in India and the Asian Pacific Association of Social Work Education. The School is also affiliated to the International Association of Schools of Social Work.

1. M A in Social Work

Admission is strictly based on merit, taking into account the marks secured in Degree course and marks secured in entrance test.

The candidates whose record of academic performance and extra-curricular activities is relatively superior, will be called for written test.

Admission will be provisional until Bachelor's Degree Pass Certificate and final mark lists are produced and is also subject to verification by Director of Government Examination and University's approval.

Eligibility Criteria

The minimum qualification required is a Bachelor's Degree in Arts, Commerce or Science of the University of Madras, including BBA or a degree of any other University recognised by the Madras University, with 50 per cent aggregate marks. Those seeking admission in the present academic year should have completed their degree in the previous academic year or earlier. The candidate should be able to read and converse in Tamil. Age: Below 30 years. An exemplary conduct is imperative for social work trainees. Reservations Community quota allotments will be as per Tamil Nadu Government rules. Out of 50 seats for M.A. in social work, 19% are reserved for SC/ST, 30% for OBC and 20% for MBC/DC. One seat is reserved for physically handicapped.

2. M.Phil.

Eligibility requirements Candidates are eligible for admission if they have secured 55% of marks or B+ grade in M.A. Social Work.

Resources

Library About 30,000 volumes comprising of titles in Social Work, Sociology, Psychology, Economics, Personnel Management, Labour Laws, Industrial Relations, Organisational Behaviour, Rural and Urban Community Development, Family and child Welfare, Medical and Psychiatric Social Work. About 40 journals, foreign and national journals are also available in the library.

Hostel Accommodation is available for men and women college students separately in the Society's Hostel. Both men's and women's hostel are situated in the same campus. Request for hostel accommodation should be made in writing in the prescribed form to the Warden of the Hostel.

Computer Centre MSSW has a full-fledged centre with latest state-of-the-art computer systems. The students can get on to the information highway for learning and communication purposes using the Internet facility available therein. Students are also offered orientation on use of computers and internet. The centre also has advanced facilities for data analysis and multimedia presentations.

Students Association Students Association arranges a variety of programmes like lectures, debates, sports, games, picnics, fund raising campaign and social service projects. All the students are members of this association. Students in every specialisation also have their own forum for bringing out students' publications.

Scholarships MSSW offers scholarships to deserving students on merit-cum-means basis. The students eligible and willing for scholarships should make a written application to the Principal.

Awards and Prizes

MSSW encourages its students by honouring the best through annual awards.

Mary Clubwala Jadhav Medal: This award is given to the student who obtains the highest percentage at the end of the course. Mrs. Chandra Reddy Medal: This award is given to a second year student for best performance in field work. The National Institute of Personnel Management (Calcutta) Medal: The final year student with highest marks in Personnel Management is honoured with this award. Maria Philip Award: This award, which includes a cash prize of Rs.1000 and a certificate is given to a second year student for best all-round performance. Dr. D.C. Kothari Rolling Cup: This award is given to the student who scores the highest marks in research taking 1st and 2nd year performance together. N.C. Jayachandran Prize: This award is for best attendance and internal marks.
