According to Guinness Book of World Records ([1]) Madonna is the "most successful female solo artist of all time", selling 120 million albums as of November 2000".

In a 2005 press release, her record label, Warner Bros., reported she had international sales in excess of 200 million albums. [2] Also that year, Rolling Stone reported that Madonna had sold more than 250 million records throughout the world. [3]

Madonna's The Immaculate Collection is the highest selling greatest hits album by a female artist in the world and in the U.S., with more than 10 million U.S. sales and 26 million worldwide sales. You Can Dance is the best-selling remix album of all-time, with 7 million copies sold worldwide.

Madonna is the oldest and only female artist of the 1980s to have a video retired on MTV's TRL. This occurred in February 2006 with "Hung Up". "Hung Up" spent eleven days at number one on TRL, including its fiftieth showing.

"Sorry" reached the top spot on the United World Chart, ending the fifteen week reign of "Hung Up" on the chart, bumping it to number two. Madonna is the first artist, since the creation of the chart, to have two singles sitting at the top two positions on the chart in one week.

Madonna is the richest female singer in the world, and one of the richest self-made women in the world, with an estimated net worth of over $850 million. Her wealth is closer to $850m USD than the reported $665m. In 2004 alone, she earned more than $50 million with her Re-Invention Tour. On ABC's "Life of Luxury", which aired on December 13, 2000, Madonna was named the richest female artist with an estimated fortune of $613,000,000.

  • According to the Guinness Book of World Records, Madonna is the Most Successful Female Recording Artist of All Time.
  • Madonna is the highest earning female singer of all time, according to the 2007 Guinness Book of Records.
  • From 1963 to 1996 Elizabeth Taylor had the record of the greatest change of costumes in a motion picture with the movie Cleopatra. Madonna, 23 years later, broke that record when she had 83 changes of costumes during the motion picture Evita. She also wore 39 hats, 45 pairs of shoes and 56 pairs of earrings.
  • From 1988 to 2002, the Guinness Book of World Records named Madonna as the Most Successful Artist on Record for the unprecedented worldwide success of the True Blue album, which hit number one in 28 countries.[citation needed]

With seven songs, Madonna holds the record for most number-one singles in the 1980s by a female artist. Madonna is also the third-oldest female to place a number one at the Billboard Hot 100. The single "Music" reached the number-one spot when Madonna was forty-two years and one month old (September 2000). She is behind Tina Turner's single, "What's Love Got to Do with It?", which made number one when Turner was forty-five years old (1984), and Cher whose single, "Believe," reached number one when Cher was fifty-two years old (1999).

For only the second time in Billboard history, one artist was number one on all four of Billboard's dance charts. Evita was the highest grossing musical film of the 1990s, and also made more money than any musical film in the 1980s. It made $50,047,179 at the domestic box office and $91,000,000 overseas for an impressive worldwide box office total of $141,047,179.

Sex, a 128-page coffee table book priced at $49.95 hit #1 on the non-fiction bestseller lists of both the New York Times and Washington Post and sold a record 500,000 copies around the world in just one week.

In 2003, Madonna released her first of five children's storybooks, The English Roses. It was #1 on the New York Times bestseller list and was simultaneously released in over one hundred countries. It holds the world record as the fastest-selling children's picture book in history. Since then, Madonna has released another four children's books, all of which have gone on to major success.

In August 1987, Madonna performed at Parc de Sceaux in Paris during her Who's That Girl Tour. She performed to an estimated crowd of between 120,000 and 130,000 people, the biggest show of all time in France. On November 6, 1993, Madonna's show in Maracanã Stadium in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil became her most successful show in terms of audience attendance as she performed to an estimated crowd of 120,000 people.

All of Madonna's concert tours have sold out globally, making her one of the most successful live acts to ever have performed. In 2004, her Re-Invention Tour was the most successful tour of the year, selling out globally despite ticket prices upwards of US$300.

Madonna's December 3, 1990 appearanceof Madonna on ABC's Nightline regarding the banning of the "Justify My Love" video became the highest-rated episode of the late-night news program that year, outranking the August 24 telecast about the Iraqi troops who had surrounded the US Embassy (that precipitated the 1991 Gulf War). Saturday Night Live's 90-second broadcast of the "Justify My Love" video became the highest-rated episode of the show that season. CNN's Showbiz Today's highly-publicized 112-second video clip garnered the greatest number of viewers the show had the week it was aired.

A poll of 31,000 people conducted by British Hit Single and published by the Guinness Book of Records ranked "Like a Prayer" as the fifth Favorite Single of All Time in Britain. A survey conducted by the British Broadcasting Corporation's Radio 2 in 2000 among its listneers and a panel of song artists and music industry figures named madonna among the 100 Best Voices of the Century.
