Madipakkam is one among the southern suburbs of Chennai, in Tamil Nadu. It is a residential municipality close to the Chennai Airport and is adjacent to the suburbs of Velachery, Nanganallur, Adambakkam, Keelkattalai and Vijaya Nagar.

A prominent landmark in Madipakkam is the Ayyappan Temple. The Bala Vinayagar temple is also quite popular. Another well know landmark is Poniamman Temple. The Sundara Vinayagar temple is a famous temple where people throng during festivals especially during Thirukalaya Utsavam in the month of February and during Vinayagar Chaturthi.

As of 2001 India censusGRIndia, Madippakkam had a population of 14,940. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Madippakkam has an average literacy rate of 88%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 90%, and female literacy is 85%. In Madippakkam, 9% of the population are under 6 years of age.
Almost every family has a vehicle - usually a two-wheeler - but cars are increasing in number. There are a lot of buses that connect people to the nearest railway station which is St. Thomas Mount. Autos are still commonly used but are considered a little expensive. A few horse carriages still come from St. Thomas Mount station but are seldom seen these days.
Definitely one of the most populous places in Chennai, the real estate prices of the place are soaring rapidly by the day. Urbanization is forcing people to build apartments over houses. This is certainly going to become even worse once the Railway Station at Velachery comes up. The same is nearer than the St. Thomas Mount Station and is expected to take a major load of Commuters from Madipakkam towards the Main City.

Madipakkam has a number of schools catering to students from Kindergarten to Higher Secondary. Few of them are NewPrince matriculation,St.Thomas, Sai, Rajkumar Sulochana, Holy Prince, Prince Matriculation and Kings.

Being mostly a residential area, there are ample shops and quite a few banks. Bank of Tanjore was among the first to be set up, which was acquired over by Indian Bank. Now it has HDFC, SBI bank & ATM, ICICI, UTI banks apart from Indian Bank.
There are a couple of super markets in the area, one of the most prominent being Trinethra & subiksha. Some of the prominent communities include Ayyappa Nagar, Ram Nagar, Sadasiva Nagar,perumal nagar.
There are about 4 petrol bunks nearby. The place is pretty much self sufficient with most shops present nearby.

The Madipakkam Main road is also referred to as Koot road because, its a mixture of all facilities and is the main connection point between a lot of places, thus signifying the tamil word kootu which means mixture of a lot of things.
