From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
There have been several times in history when Germany fielded an Eighth Army. In the First World War, the Eighth Army was organized in the East, to defend East Prussia against an expected Russian offensive. Its first commander was Max von Prittwitz und Gaffron, who was superseded in early August by Paul von Hindenburg, after the Chief of the General Staff, Helmuth von Moltke, had lost confidence in him. At the Battle of Tannenberg, the Eighth Army decisively defeated the Russian Second Army.
