MacquarieCon

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

MACQUARIEcon is a long running roleplaying convention, run in Sydney, Australia. Now in its 26th year, it is organised by the student roleplaying group at Macquarie University, MURPS and is held at the University Campus every second weekend of December. It is often the biggest roleplaying convention held in Sydney.

The games on offer are normally 3-hour sessions. A variety of game genres are available, including regular table-tops (such as D&D), ongoing campaigns (such as those organised by the RPGA), freeforms (live-action games), and sometimes officially sanctioned card games (ie Magic the Gathering). The Saga of Ravens Nest, a long running campaign featured at the Con, has a history as long as the Convention itself, and has a continuous plotflow with plots and characters that continue from year to year. The convention has a wide variety of games, normally about 26 to choose from.

Along with Arcanacon (Melbourne), CanCon (Canberra) and Necronomicon (also Sydney), MACQUARIEcon is an institution in the Australian Roleplaying Community, and is the main convention in Sydney. Many great game designers have written for the Convention, earlier games played through into the night, and players could sleep on site (this stopped in the early 1990's as a result of the "phantom crapper" incident).

Attendees include roleplayers from Sydney and Interstate, not just from the University itself. Except for 2000 and 1996, a MacQCon has has been run every year since 1980.
