Mackenzie refers to Clan MacKenzie (Scottish clan). "Mac" or "Mc" is gaelic for "son of," and "Kenzie" is a derrivative of the name Kenneth, which itself translates into "the handsome one". The <z> is originally a yogh, and the pronunciation with /z/ is actually an unetymological reflex of the modern spelling, but it is universal and now accepted as correct.
