Macaulay is a railway station in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. It is located on the Upfield line, just off Macaulay Road at the boundary of the suburbs of Kensington and North Melbourne. It is 4.5 km from Flinders Street Station, and is in Metcard ticketing Zone 1.
[edit] Location
The station is unique in that it is situated at ground level beneath the CityLink tollway, which is held up by large concrete coloumns situated behind the platform fencing. As the tollway above blocks light from shining onto the platforms, the station can be quite dark even during the day.
The station is surrounded by mostly factories and warehouses, and also Moonee Ponds Creek. As Kensington station on the Broadmeadows line is only 400m down the road, which is significantly closer to the residential area, Macaulay is one of the least used stations on the suburban system, and a rather isolated and lonely location at night.
[edit] Facilities
There are a total of two platforms at Macaulay. Platform 1 (to city) has a substantial brick building with a disused booking office, while Platform 2 (from city) has a small brick shelter of similar architectural style. Each platform has one of the smaller coin-only Metcard ticket machines, and the outbound platform in addition has a Telstra payphone.
